Preparing to Breastfeed

Breastfeeding our babies can be one of the loveliest experiences when it works out well for everyone, but it's also so often the case that we don't prepare for our breastfeeding journey and we end up giving up sooner than we'd hoped for, because we didn't foresee some common obstacles and how to handle them. Being prepared and informed, can significantly increase our chances of getting to feed our babies the way that we wanted to, and also significantly increases postpartum well-being and speeds up recovery.

Our Milk Mentors peer supporters have prepared a fun and informative course to help you plan for your breastfeeding journey and get you off on the right start.

"I'm so grateful to Milk Mentors for setting me up and preparing me for a successful exclusively breastfed journey. Their dedication to helping others has helped me understand the details of breastfeeding and gave me the confidence to keep going.

What an amazing resource with such wonderful volunteers who give up their time to support mothers. Forever thankful."

Our Course

The Preparing to Breastfeed antenatal course is a five hour course that runs for two and half hours over two Sundays. It takes place in a lovely yoga studio out in the North Bucks countryside, at The Space Within Wellbeing Centre in Astwood. It's a friendly, relaxed, and informal environment to encourage dialogue and discussion around the content.

Topics covered includes:

  • The benefits of breastfeeding

  • What to expect of the fourth trimester

  • The basics of how to breastfeed

  • How to know if it's working and what to do if you hit an obstacle

  • Common concerns and what to know

  • How partners/dads can help with breastfeeding

And you'll leave with the opportunity to join a group WhatsApp, network with your Milk Mentors instructors and other expectant parents who can end up being your own little early day support network when you need them. You'll also receive printed resources that includes a list of local support if you need to access it once baby arrives.

"Thank you so much Milk Mentors for delivering a really informative course and for creating such a supportive and inclusive environment to go with it."
